California to Sue Federal Government for Polluting Vessels in Suisun Bay
SAN FRANCISCO (August 27, 2008) – To clean up toxic pollution caused by the deterioration of approximately 50 obsolete federal vessels anchored in Suisun Bay, the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board today announced its intention to sue the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Water Board’s planned enforcement action will reinforce a suit brought last year by Arc Ecology, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and San Francisco Baykeeper to halt the ships’ discharge of more than nineteen tons of toxic heavy metals into Suisun Bay.

Study Links California Hospitalizations to Hotter Weather
LOS ANGELES (August 26, 2008) – Rising temperatures have already impacted the health of thousands of Californians, according to a paper in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), written by scientists at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “The 2006 California Heat Wave: Impacts on Hospitalizations and Emergency Department Visits,” describes the enormous health impacts of California’s severe heat wave in 2006. According to a separate analysis by NRDC, these impacts were estimated to have cost California $133 million in health-related costs. More intense, more frequent and longer duration heat waves are projected for California in the coming decades due to global warming.

Court Denies Challenge to LA Bus Fare Hike
LOS ANGELES (August 25, 2008) – A Los Angeles Superior Court judge today denied a legal challenge blocking increased bus fares in low-income neighborhoods. Conservation and community groups had argued the fare hike should not go forward until an environmental assessment is complete. Higher fares could make public transportation unaffordable for as many as 100,000 bus riders with an annual median income of $12,000, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Bus Riders Union and the Labor/Community Strategy Center.

Court Strikes Down Bush Administration Pollution Monitoring Loophole, Upholds Public's Right to Know
Washington, D.C. (August 19, 2008) – A federal appeals court today struck down an Environmental Protection Agency rule that exempted major industrial polluters from accurately measuring dangerous emissions. The court held that EPA violated the Clean Air Act in allowing the largest air pollution sources to avoid monitoring, recording and recordkeeping of air pollution emissions needed to assure compliance with clean air laws. The EPA rule actually barred permitting agencies from requiring any of these activities in clean air permits.
